Plaque dedicated to Pia de' Tolomei on the exterior wall of Palazzo Tolomei with verses of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, Siena, Tuscany, Italy

In Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, in the fifth song of Purgatory, we find the verses: "Do thou remember me who am the Pia; Siena made me, unmade me Maremma", in Italian: "Ricorditi di me che son la Pia, Siena mi fé, disfecemi Maremma". Pia de' Tolomei asks Dante, when he has returned to the world and has rested on his long journey, to remember her, born in Siena and died violently in Maremma, killed by her husband.
