Model of an conical ducts from a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci in Codex 241 r. It would have been used to measure wind and water speed, Leonardo designed this device made up of conical ducts positioned in front of a rotating paddle. The air or water flow passing through the two tapering ducts moves the paddle wheel as if it were a turbine, and when ropes are wrapped around the wooden axle they are able to lift weights and thus indicate the driving force.
