Your weeds and your neighbor's : part 3 illustrated descriptive list of weeds . all, very leafy anderect growth; its lettuce-like top; and itswide distribution. It is considered, andjustly, a bad weed wherever found, and, notwithstanding the fondness that horsesand cattle often exhibit for it (172, 118),its aggressiveness is looked upon withdread by most of our farmers. It is mostly found on the richestparts of the farm, and is a great robberof the soil. The several species beingmostly annual or biennial should, andwill, yield to the scythe if persistentlyapplied just before the flowers open. Ifcut too soon, a second crop will causethe work to be done over again. After cutting the plants should becarefully composted as they are very valuable as a manure, yieldinga large quantity of nitrogen and potash. The milky juice of these species is rich in a substance anala-gous to opium, which has been pointed out as a probable substitutefor the commercial product. Although narcotic, this substancehardly deserves a tithe of the reputation held for it by somemedical Wild Lettuce. 114. Sow-thistle. (A) So/ichus oleraceus, L.
