JOHNS SOLDIERS life, during the war, is very uncertain, andso there was no occasion for surprise when all the com-rades were settled comfortably at Pigeon Point, and thedays were spent in wondering whether the Batterywould again engage in active service against the enemy, that an order came for the left section to be ready toproceed to Hilton Hilton Head, where? That was only conjecture. If the officersknew, the men did not. Comrade Hotchkiss, who was verj observant, andoften picked up scraps of information, wrote in his diary under date , 1862 : Left section, two guns, Lieutenant Cannon, left camp on someexpedition; Captain also went; and three days later: One regiment fromhere, several from Hilton Head, were in the expedition in which our leftsection went, but dont know where. Two sections of Hamiltons Batteryalso went. General Brannan refused to grant Captain Rockwells request to beallowed to go in command, on the ground that a section was properly a Lieu-tenants command
