Evans and Scott on Terra Nova. British explorers Lieutenant Teddy Evans (left, 1880-1957) and Captain Robert Falcon Scott (right, 1868-1912) on the Terra Nova on 1 January 1911 as it sailed to Antarctica during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition, the primary expedition objectives were scientific. Departing New Zealand on 29 November, they landed at Cape Evans on 4 January 1911. A shore party of 34, led by Scott, spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott and four others died in 1912 returning from the South Pole.
