The chorio- capillaris becomes atrophied, and the larger vessels are seen with the ophthalmoscope as white worm-like bodies in the fundus, occasionally with thin columns of blood within them. The atrophy of the chorio-capillaris has a marked effect on the outer layers of the retina, the pigment cells proliferating and migrating (see page 471). Other secondary degenera- tive processes follow such as the formation of colloid nodu- les on the membrane of Bruch (see page 644). In extreme cases the nutrition of the overlying retina is cut off and it loses its function in that locality.
