Weather balloon launch. This is a captive (tethered) weather balloon, that will obtain its data while anchored to the ground rather than being released to rise through the atmosphere. It is a BALTHUM (Balloon Temperature and Humidity) barrage balloon, designed to measure temperature and humidity. The data gathered is used by the Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service. Photographed at the Met Research Unit (MRU) in Cardington, Bedfordshire, UK, in around 1979.
