James Ludovic Lindsay, Earl Crawford and Balcarres, 1878. Lindsay (1847-1913), a Scottish nobleman who succeeded to his titles in 1880, was an astronomer, collector and bibliophile. He built an observatory on the family estates at Dunecht near Aberdeen in c1872. In 1888 he donated the 15,000 items which form the Crawford Library to the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh.
