Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy: campanile added in 1330 to the Romanesque Parish Church of Santa Maria della Pieve. The campanile is still renowned for the mullioned openings which have earned it the name “delle cento buche” (of 100 holes). The Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pieve or Pieve di Santa Maria, also known as the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, was founded in 1009, probably on the site of a previous church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In the 1200s the present church was given a new facade and the church’s tall bell tower, known as "of the hundred holes" (“delle cento buche”) because of its many mullioned windows, was finished in 1330. Thus, the architecture of Pieve di Santa Maria covers the Romanesque and Gothic periods.
