First electric submarine. Historical artwork of the Goubet II battery-powered submarine, which was first launched in 1889. Designed by Claude Goubet, it was around five metres long. In tests in Cherbourg, France, it remained submerged for eight hours, and travelled at a few knots, evading detection by nearby ships. It had problems maintaining a constant depth, however, and was not completely stable.
