Zooparc de Beauval. France's largest zoo in central France is the home to pandas Yuan Zi and Huan Huan. The three year old Pandas are a gift of China to France and are now settling in their new surroundings with abundant bamboo and their own vet Justine to keep an eye on the exotic pair. They arrived in February 2012 and are called Yuan Zi is the male and the zoo hopes he and his mate the female Huan Huan may be encouraged to start their own family at the zoo in the future. They are in a beautiful enclosure, designed like a little traditional part of China to make them feel at home. Zooparc de Beauval covers over 26 hectares of rolling French countryside and has long been a favourite visiting stop for tourists. The Panda pair are currenly metres tall and weigh 80 kgs each but will reach and 250 kgs when they become adults at the age of six. At the moment their bamboo intake is 30kgs a day. This will increase as they get bigger. Visitors to the zoo are encouraged to come early as Pandas are 'morning animals' - preferring to sleep during the day and not much else at night, necessary as it takes a lot out of their stamina to turn the coarse bamboo into essential body fat and nutrition. 3rd March 2012.
