Wilhelm and Cosima Wagner, 1872
Wagner and Cosima von Buelow, 1872. Wilhelm Richard Wagner (May 22, 1813 - February 13, 1883) was a German composer, theater director, polemicist, and conductor who is primarily known for his operas. Unlike most opera composers, Wagner wrote both the libretto and the music for each of his stage works. He revolutionized opera through his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art), by which he sought to synthesize the poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts, with music subsidiary to drama, and which was announced in a series of essays between 1849 and 1852. He died of a heart attack at the age of 69 in 1883. Cosima Wagner (December 24,1837 - April 1,1930) was the daughter of the Hungarian pianist and composer Franz Liszt. She became the second wife of the German composer Richard Wagner, and with him founded the Bayreuth Festival as a showcase for his stage works; after his death she devoted the rest of her life to the promotion of his music and philosophy.
