Looking WSW over Rhedynog Goch & Ty Pellaf farmhouses to Henllwyn bay (L), Porth Solfach (R) & lighthouse on South End, Bardsey Island, Gwynedd. Lighthouse and buildings designed by Joseph Nelson, completed 1821, lantern renewed 1856, further additions 1909. Tower battered externally and square in section, built of ashlar, 99 feet high, originally painted white changed to red-and-white in 1891. It causes the deaths of 1000s of migrating birds so spotlights and ponds have been constructed to bring confused birds safely to grass or water. Farmhouses & yard built 1870-75 by Lord Newborough. Artist & writer Brenda Chamberlain lived on Bardsey 1947-61, mainly in Carreg farmhouse; she described her experiences in the book Tide-race published in 1962.
