No sooner had they realised the exact natureof his dispositions than they massed their troops towardstheir centre, with the intention of making a grand , noticing the gathering, sent an officer, Grant, toreconnoitre. On receiving Grants report he despatchedto the front the gallant Bourchier, supporting him withhis cavalry. It was seen that the rebels had lined theopposite bank of the canal, and had only been preventedfrom making their forward m
