Black and white engraved portrait of Pope Benedict IX. Pope Benedict IX (c. 1012 – c. 1056 was Pope on three occasions between 1032 and 1048. He was the only man to have been Pope on more than one occasion and the only man ever to have sold the papacy. He was the first ever Pope to step down from the position. Pope Benedict XVI is to resign at the end of February after nearly eight years as the head of the Catholic Church after saying he's too old to continue at the age of 85.
