The Washing-ton Monument is on the reservationsouth of the Trea-sury, and is an obe-lisk 570 feet great height andfreedom from mei-e-tricious ornamentcreates a profoundimpression on themind of the behold-er. Its inner surface is ornamented at intervals with memorial stones, sent fromvarious nations, States, and associations of different kinds throughout the world, andso arranged as not to be interfered with by the iron stairway, which ascends to thetop of the monument. These stones add to the interest in the work, as showing-how wide-spread is the fame of Washinton. The various inscriptions and highlyembellished designs on these tablets add much to the beauty of this part of thestructure. In addition to the stairway, in the centre of the shaft, there is theusual elevator. The view from the top is enchanting, and no one visiting the cityshould fail to ascend and enjoy the scene.
