Scenery close to the chuch of St. John's in the vale, Lake District
The church of St. John's in the Vale was one of the five chapels of Crosthwaite. The present building dates from 1845 but incorporates parts of an older church. It contains the grave of john Richardson, a dialect poet of some fame in Cumberland. The Lake District National Park is one of Britain's most dramatic regions; an area of outstanding natural beauty. Tucked away in the north-west corner of England it is the biggest of her national parks, covering 885 square miles. The area contains: high fells, rocky crags, lush green dales, long still lakes, villages and quiet hamlets. It contains England's highest mountain in Scafell Pike and her deepest lake - Wastwater. The area became widely known in the 19th century when William and Dorothy Wordsworth wrote about the area in their poems and journals. The area then became fashionable as a stream of poets, artists and writers came to visit them at Grasmere.
