As an alterna-tive for this, the methoddescribed in the secondinstance in connectionwith interdigital shieldsmay be utilized. Number 2. The narrowstrip and the half-inchcombination consists ofa narrow strip, aboutfour inches in length, adhered to the inner sur-face of the toe and car-ried twice around the toeacross the surface of theshield, anterior to theaperture. This, as willbe seen, binds down the distal end of the shield. The half-inch strip, about three inches in length, is then cut as shownin Fig. 7-B. Taking this strip in both hands, insert it between thetoes in such a manner as to allow the narrow portion of the. FIG. 6. STRAPPING OP 5th TOE SHIELD WITH CHIROPODIST STRIP SHIELDS AND SHIELDING 123 plaster to fit intO the narrowest part of the toe web. Thencarry the outer broad end of the strip around on the dorsumof the toe and adhere it across that part of the shieldposterior to the aperture, taking care, however, that theadhesive plaster is half on the shield and half on the integu-ment adjoining it. Adhere the remaining broad end of theplaster (that comingfrom between the toes)over the first appliedposterior strips, takingthe same care that shieldand skin are both coveredby the plaster (Fig. 8). This alternate styleof strapping is particu-larly useful in caseswhere the narrow stripsof method No. 1 arefound to irritate the skinof the toe web, or if therebe a corneous excres-cence developed therewhich cannot be coveredby the plaster; instead ofusing the half-inch strip,as just described, a half-inch or inch strip, abouttwo inches in length, iscut and placed across the pj^
