Lava dam construction. Truck and bulldozers on the slopes of Mount Etna, a volcano on the Italian island of Sicily. The truck is being loaded with rocks for the construction of a dam. The dam is intended to divert a lava flow, a river of molten rock produced by the volcano, away from populated areas. A lava flow will burn and crush objects in its path. Etna stands 3323 metres tall, and is the largest active volcano in Europe.
