The heat -en,ated is perceptible if the proportion of oxygen does nifall below 0-1 pier cent. The apparatus used is showlin the accompanying figure. f f /^=. -M The gas, mixed with excess of sulphuretted hydra[lasses in sue cession through two flasks, the first of wcontains some water and one bulb of a differential t!inonietcr. whilst the second contains at the bottom s:pieces of coke, upon which there is a layer of oxide, abi5 cm. thick, surrounding the second bulb of the theimometer. The water in the first flask saturates the $Bwith moisture and prevents the drying of the oxide, whitethe sulphuretted hydrogen prevents the exhaustion of thpurifying material, by re-forming Fe2S2 immediatdjshould oxidation occur. The flasks are of 300-40(1 Oilcapacity. The bulbs of the thermometer, which hoiabout 3 arc filled about one-third with ether. Wlieithe mercury column reaches a predetermined positionin electrical contact is established between the wires 0the hell circuit, as shown in the figure. The presence Doxygen is therefore indicated by the rise of temperaturin the oxide. The oxide must be renewed at least onea fortnight, as its sensitive
