Rizhsky Market, April 1991. Outside of the largest public market in Moscow, during the last year of the Soviet Union. After the Soviet Union began allowing private enterprise in 1988 the main building of the market was quickly surrounded by shacks or Kiosks selling everything from counterfeit CDs to home appliances. According to historians, in the late 1980’s and early 90’s the Rizhsky market on Prospect Mira in northern Moscow fell under control of gangs and Russian organized crime groups. Photo shows trash and a dumpster on fire outside the market at the end of a spring day in 1991.
