Supermassive black hole at centre of our galaxy, EHT image

Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration image of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way. The black hole lies 26,000 light years away from Earth. Despite the black hole itself being completely dark, this image shows its central dark region (shadow) surrounded by a ring of glowing gas warped by the hole's own gravity. Image taken using 2017 observations from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a global network of radio telescopes including the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX).
