Deep brain stimulation surgery. Close-up of the implanted pulse generator (IPG) being inserted into the chest of a 59-year-old man with Parkinson's disease during deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery. This neurosurgical treatment involves the placement of an implanted pulse generator (IPG) in the chest, which sends electrical impulses to specific areas of the brain through electrodes implanted below the scalp and inserted through the skull. The electrodes provide continuous electrical stimulation, which blocks the signals that cause the tremors of Parkinson's disease.
