Sponza Palace, Dubrovnik, Croatia. Construction of the Sponza Palace began in 1516. A mix of Gothic and early Renaissance architectural styles, the palace served as the commercial centre of the city. One wing of the building housed the state mint. In the 15th and 16th century Dubrovnik was a major trading rival to Venice in the Adriatic.
