Caption: Bikaner, Rajasthan, India - Apr 2003. A swinging chair on the balcony of Bhanwar Palace, the former residency of a wealthy merchant, still owned by the same family, but now a boutique hotel. Even princes once renowned for their extravagant pomp and spending, once dethroned and stripped of land, were allowed to keep their palaces. Deprived of the taxes they collected from farmers and villagers, they had to convert their stately homes into tourist ventures to avoid bankruptcy. Famous for its poetry in sandstone, the ancient desert town of Bikaner is strewn with intricately carved havelis and palaces like the walls of this building.
