Genetically modified wheat research. Geneticist holding a test tube containing a genetically modified wheat (Triticum sp.) plant. Fusarium chitinase and glucanase genes have been inserted into the plant, in the hope that it may lead to plants that are more resistant to Fusarium head blight. Fusarium head blight is caused by the Fusarium graminearum fungus. This disease can devastate wheat and barley (Hordeum vulgare) crops.
