There are two branches of the military pro-fession upon which success depends. Theyare essentially different from each other, andyet so dependent, that a commander of anarmy, who is not master of both, is not masterof the situation. These two branches are styledstrategy and tactics. Strategy embraces themovements and manoeuvres of the differentparts of an army, outside of the reach of theenemys cannon; or, in other words, out ofhis sight.
