Streptococcus bacterium. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Streptococcus bacteria group A. The bacterium at centre is undergoing cell division which is almost completed. This beta-haemolytic (group A) Streptococcus bacteria are rounded or spherical Gram-positive cocci. These bacteria are the most common cause of tonsillitis. They attach to the surface of the tonsil, multiply and release harmful substances. Also they are a common cause of puerperal fever in mothers. Magnification: x30,000 at 35mm size.
