It is the rupture of the rhomboid ligament in dislocation of thesternal end of the clavicle that gives rise to the deformity peculiar tothis accident. The interarticular fibro-cartilage is nearly circular in form, andthicker at the edges than in the centre. It is attached above, to theclavicle; below, to the cartilage of the first rib; and throughout therest of its circumference to the anterior and posterior sterno-clavicular 136 SCAPULO-CLAVICULAR LIGAMENTS. ligaments. It di^ddes the joint into two cavities, which are lined bydistinct synovial membranes. This cartilage is sometimes piercedthrough its centre, and not unfrequently deficient, to a greater or lessextent, at its lower part. Fig. 65.*. 2. Scapulo-clavicular ArUctiJation.—The ligaments of the scapularend of the clavicle are, the Superior acromio-clavicular,Inferior acromio-clavicular,Coraco-clavicular {trapezoid and conoid), Interarticular fibro-cartilage, Two synovial membranes. The superior acromio-clavicular ligameni is a moderately thick jjlaneof fibres passing between the extremity of the clavicle and the acromion, upon the upper surface of the joint. The inferior acromio-clavicidar ligament is a thin plane situatedupon the under surface. These two ligaments are continuous witheach other in front and behind, and form a complete capsule aroundthe joint. The coraco-clavicidar ligament {trapezoid, conoid) is a thick fasci-culus of ligamentous fibres, passing obliquely between the base of thecoracoid process and the under surface of the clavicle, and holding the end of the cla^icle in firm connection with the scapula. When seenfrom before, it has a quadrilate
