Marchwood,Hampshire Tuesday 9th August 2016 Firefighters, police officers and the ambulance service were called to a blaze at Biffa Waste Services Ltd on the Marchwood Industrial Estate yesterday (Monday 08 August 2016) which, at it's height, required ten fire engines, two aerial ladder platforms, multiple support vehicles and over 100 emergency services responders. The fire was in a building containing 400 tonnes of household waste, with 150 tonnes well alight. Crews battled the blaze throughout the day, overnight and well into Tuesday using 50 breathing apparatus, eight jets and the monitors from two aerial ladder platforms to extinguish the fire, which required the removal of more than 100 tonnes of waste from the building. The fire is now out, with the stop message being received at 13:44 on Tuesday 09 August 2016, but the remaining waste will be closely monitored for the next few days to make sure no re-ignition occurs. No one was injured in the fire, but we did ask residents directly affected by the smoke plume to close their doors and windows as a precaution, which is no longer necessary. Staff at the site have. now started a mass clear up at the site.©UKNIP
