The special fittings are helpful, but not necessary. The returns can be con- nected and carried to the Ijpiler as one 2%-inch pipe or two 2-inch pipes. SLUGGISH CIBCULATION. I wish to ask a question in regard to hot water heating. I have two houses, one of them 18x100 and the other 12x50. The flows go directly from the boiler up to the purlins and at that height to the other end of the house; then they drop down to coils under the benches. The coils are made up with return bends, so that the water travels practically 400 feet to get back to the boiler. As the coils are horizontal, it is almost impossible to get a steady fall all the way; hence pockets form and some of the coils are every little while becoming dead. There is one coil on the side wall, and that, having a good fall, heats satisfactorily. But the houses are so arranged that the rest of the coils must go under the benches. My idea is to take out the return bends and put in manifolds; then I can get a steady fall all the way. The manifolds, of course, would be horizon- tal. Do you think this would remedy the trouble? I use a mercury circula- tor. As the small house has only two returns under the benches, the piping is the same in effect as a manifold and works satisfactorily. C. P. H. The trouble is undoubtedly
