Tree portrait, from wharf by South Junction Viaduct, ducks swimming Castlefield Junction, Castlefield Canal Basin, Manchester
The 1805 Trans-Pennine Rochdale Canal joins the Castlefield Canal Basin, from the north-east, at Castle Street Bridge (behind the camera to the left). The 1765 Bridgewater Canal leads from the basin (out of sight to the right). This part of the canal basin is, therefore, called the Castlefield Junction. Four railway viaducts cross the canal basin. The most southerly of the four, standing on the right, is the red brick 1849 Manchester South Junction and Altrincham Viaduct, which crosses the basin by way of a m cast iron arch bridge. The 40m span Merchants Footbridge, crossing the junction, is a 3m wide deck suspended by 13 hangers from steel arches. It is part of the Castlefield Heritage Park, turning an industrial canal basin into a tourist attraction A view looking west across the junction, near the Barca Cafe Bar.
