Breeding range.—The upland or field plover, sometimes called theBartramian sandpiper, is one of the few shorebirds that nest commonlyin the Mississippi Valley. Early in the settlement of this region,much more than half the upland plovers probably nested withinthe boundaries of the United States. The summer range extends north to southern Maine(Norton), southern Ontario (Renfrew; Clarke), and southern Michi-gan (Wood). Then it bends far to the northward through centralWisconsin (Kumlien and Hollister) to central Keewatin (Cape Eskimo;Preble), southern Mackenzie (Fort Smith; Preble), northern Yukon(MDougall), and to the Kowak River in northwestern Alaska(Townsend).
