WILLIAM JOHNSON COCKER was born at Almondbury, Yorkshire, England, March i 7,1846, son of Benjamin F. and Mary (Johnson)Cocker. His parents emigrated to Australia in1850, and thence to the United States. The sonwas prepared for college at the Ann Arbor Highschool, where he was graduated in 1864, and enteredthe University of Michigan the same year. At theend of his Junior year he accepted a position asassistant in the General Library of the University for. JOHNSON COCKER one year. He then resumed his studies and was grad-uated Bachelor of Arts with the Class of 1S69. Set-tling in Adrian, Michigan, soon after graduation, hewas appointed Principal of the city High School,which position he held for ten years. From 1879 ^^1885 he was Superintendent of the Adrian schools,and from 18S5 to 1888 a membeiof the School Board. 2o6 UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN In 1888 he became president of the CommercialSavings Bank of Adrian and continued in the bank-ing business there up to the time of his death. In1S89 he was elected Regent of the University, andat the end of eight years was re-elected for a secondterm. He was chairman of the Finance Committeefor some years and instituted the present system ofmanaging the budget.
