Psoriasis of the fingernail. Close-up of psoriasis affecting the fingernail of a 46-year-old female patient. The nail appears uneven, thickened and flaky. Psoriasis occurs when the immune system mistakes a normal skin cell for a pathogen, and sends out faulty signals that cause overproduction of new skin cells. The body cannot shed the cells fast enough, resulting in patches (plaques) of scaly, thick skin, which are often itchy and may become infected. It is thought to be triggered by emotional stress, some infections or certain drugs, although in many cases there is no obvious cause. When psoriasis affects the nails it makes the nail grow faster and thicker than usual.
