Frances Elwes died in 1678,'* when Throcking passed to her son Jeremy ; The latter died with- out issue in 1683," when his brother Robert succeeded to his ; In 1731 Robert Elwes died and Throcking descended to his son of the same name,™ who held it until his death in 1752, when it passed to his son Cary ; In 1781 Cary Elwes with his only son by his first marriage, Cary Elwes the younger," settled the manor.*' This son died in that year and on the death of Cary Elwes the elder in 1782 the only son of his second marriage, Robert Cary Elwes, was his ; In 1799 Robert Cary Elwes sold the manor to George Wood,"* by whose executors it was sold to John Ray of Finchley in 1817.'° After the death of John Ray in 1840 his lands in Throcking were sold in separate parcels by his executors and the manorial rights were allowed to ; There was a mansion-house on the manor of Throcking in 1549, when it is mentioned in the will of George Hyde.*^ In 1692 Robert Elwes, then lord of the manor, built a new house, which Chauncy
