Rhone Glacier, Valais canton, Switzerland: scientists measure glacial shrinkage far out on the deeply fissured ice flowing from the Tieralplistock.
Rhône Glacier, Valais canton, Switzerland: with climate change having already caused the end of the glacier to shrink nearly half a kilometre back towards its source since the early 1970s, scientists seeking to stem the rate of retreat have even resorted to covering part of the surface with UV-resistant fleecy white blankets - and claim that this has reduced the melting by up to 70%.
