Barasingha in the meadows of Kanha National Park, India


Hard-ground Barasinghas in Kanha National Park, India almost went extinct a few decades back. Serious conservation efforts, which included sustainability of habitat and breeding centers, ensured that the species recovered to some extent. Though still Vulnerable, this subspecies is found nowhere else in the world. Two other subspecies of the Barasinghas are found in Uttar Pradesh, Assam and Sunderbans. Typically, these calm animals are found in herds ranging upto 150 strong.
