He immediately began to lead others to Christ. His burn-ing zeal constrained him to establish family prayer in thehome of an older brother with whom he was boarding. Thecross was very great. He took a candle and started for hisroom, but replaced it, saying, May I pray? When he rosefrom his knees after an earnest prayer, his sister-in-law sneer-ingly said, Aaron has been to the Methodist meetings, andwants to show us how well he has learned to pray. Having re-turned from New York to his native town, he was socn madeleader of a class. With his conversion came a conscious callto the ministry. He preached his first sermon near hishome, on the New Rochelle circuit in 1790, from Rom. xiii, 12 : The night is far spent, etc.; and in the latter part of thesame conference year, (January, 1791,) encouraged by his friend
