A Short Sunderland S25 on patrol. The German U-boat crews called it the 'Flying Porcupine’ because it was so effective at clearing the decks of Jerry submarines. Sunderlands damaged or sank no less than 43 German U-boats and 12 from the Italian navy, for the loss of just ten Sunderlands.
Developed and constructed by Short Brothers for the Royal Air Force, the Short Sunderland S25 flying boat patrol bomber. At 85 feet long, it was the most luxurious wartime aircraft with a WC, wash basin, cooker and kitchen sink, with a crew of twelve who are often airborne for 14 hours they need those facilities. The German U-boat crews called it the 'Flying Porcupine’ because it was so effective at clearing the decks of Jerry submarines. Sunderlands damaged or sank no less than 43 German U-boats and 12 from the Italian navy, for the loss of just ten Sunderlands.
