Stent in an artery. Coloured angiogram (blood vessel X-ray) of a stent (wire mesh tube, centre right) positioned inside an iliac artery to treat stenosis. Stenosis is the narrowing of the lumen of an artery, usually due to the deposition of fatty plaques of atheroma on its inner walls in atherosclerosis. This can lead to a reduction in the flow of oxygenated blood reaching the organ or tissue that the artery supplies, which can cause pain and tissue death. If it occurs in an artery supplying the heart, lungs or brain, it can be swiftly fatal. The iliac arteries are formed by the division of the descending aorta (upper centre), and head towards each leg.
