Illustration of a nest of a social wasp (subfamily Vespinae) built in an abandoned burrow. The nest is made from wood that has been chewed and mixed with saliva and wax to form a paste. The queen wasp starts the construction (from the bottom), building a few cells and filling them with eggs. When there are sufficient numbers of worker wasps they take over construction from the queen. Cells are built in tiers. The nests may be built in abandoned burrows, tree or wall cavities or wood piles.
