A late 19th Century illustration of Octavian aka Caesar Augustus (63BC- AD 14), viewing the body of Mark Antony. Octavian was the first Roman emperor, reigning from 27 BC until his death in AD 14. Founder of the Roman Principate (the first phase of the Roman Empire) he was one of the most effective leaders in human history. During the on-going conflict with Antony and Cleopatra, Octavian pursued and defeated their forces in Alexandria in 30 BC, following which Antony committed suicide, by falling on his own sword.
