Microchip wafer. Rows of silicon chips (lower right) on a wafer (piece of silicon). The silicon is doped with impurities to produce areas that act as semiconductors, like transistors and diodes. These are linked on the surface of the wafer to form integrated circuits (microchips). The wafer is broken up into the individual chips, which can then be connected to a circuit board together with other electronic components to form part of a larger circuit. Electrical wiring is seen at left.
