Roman mosaic in Ostia Antica. Mosaic showing four grain measurers at work. This 3rd century mosaic is located at the Hall of Grain Measurers in Ostia Antica, an ancient Roman seaport near Rome, Italy. The port was founded by the Roman king Ancus Marcius in about 620 BC and was used to import grain and other essentials for the city of Rome. In the mosaic, the man at lower left is indicating that nine sacks of grain had arrived that day and is holding a rope with nine grain tickets attached. The other men are standing around a grain measure. One, the actual grain measurer, is holding a type of instrument. The central man is a porter who transports the grain. The man at right is indicating the number 5000 with his hands.
