Theodor Diener, American plant pathologist. Theodor Otto Diener took the scientific world by surprise in 1971 when he discovered viroids, the smallest known agents of plant disease that are 80 times smaller than a virus. His pioneering work in plant pathology has enabled the control of viroid diseases of many crops. In 1987 Diener received the prestigious National Medal of Science, and the Wolf Prize in Agriculture.
