Smoke rises from the 2017 Crown Mountain wildfire, Big Bend National Park, Texas. The fire triggered evacuation and closure of the Chisos Basin lodge

The Crown Mountain fire broke out on the southern side of the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park on Sunday (Mothers Day) May 14, 2017. The fire may have been started by lightning from storms that rolled through the region the night before. Visitors were not in danger but the fire closed the Chisos Basin Lodge and Campground as a precaution and to serve as a staging ground for Hot Shot crews brought in to fight the fire. As of Wednesday May 17th, the fire was considered fully contained and the road reopened but the campground is expected to remain closed until Thursday. Current conditions (May 2017) are dry and the fire risk is posted at "extreme" at Big Bend.
