Political Parties.—Three parties nowdivided the suffragesof the people. Thewhigs nominated Gen-eral Taylor for Presi-dent ; the democrats,Lewis Cass; and thefree-soilers, who wer6opposed to the exten-sion of slavery, MartinVan Buren. The per-sonal popularity ofGeneral Taylor, onaccount of his manysterling qualities andhis brilliant victories in the Mexican war, made him the favorite candidate, andhe was GENERAL ZACHARY TAYLOR.
