GUIDELINES FOR REVEGETATING COAL-MINED LANDS Many lands in the Eastern United States have been drastically disturbed by coal mining. The scars are evident on the sites of current surface and underground mining operations, as well as at unreclaimed abandoned mines and mine refuse piles. To help reclaim these lands, scientists at the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, in cooperation with the Environmental Protection Agency, have developed procedures for sampling, testing, and amending mine spoils. They have identified and recommended plant species and planting methods for erosion control and watershed protection, as well as for land uses such as timber harvesting and wildlife habitat. Many of the recommendations were obtained from information gathered during surveys of 30-year-old experimental tree plantings on strip-mine spoils in several Eastern States. Their findings have been incorporated into a handbook that should be valuable to surface-mine operators, landowners, reclamation contractors, and land resource White birch grows on mine spoils in Pennsylvania. 7.
