A golden-colored bronze statue of Thomas Alva Edison, the American inventor of the phonograph in 1877, is displayed with some early phonographs at his former winter estate in Fort Myers, Florida, USA. That 21-acre property is now a sprawling historical museum where visitors can also see other famous Edison inventions, including incandescent light bulbs and the motion picture camera. While his initial phonograph used a rotating cylinder covered with tinfoil to record and play back sound, later models utilized wax-coated cylinders and were fitted with large horns to amplify the sound.
